Hi, I'm moving to Hat Yai with my two daughters in end of March, due to my new job at Southern International School. We're very excited with the new adventure, but my family's so worried about the on going bombings and shooting warnings around south Thailand. My friends and future colleagues agree with the conflict is still very raw, but assured especially hatyai is safe, even feels safer than in London. Personally, I feel worrying about bombings is a waste of time as it happens everywhere in the world. But I can't hide the concern as well as need to reassure my family back home that we're going to be safe. Any comments will be much appreciated.
It’s not part of the three most southern provinces where most of the violence related to the region occurs, but it borders right next to them.
The UK includes Songkhla (the province in which Hat Yai is located) in their travel warning due to a threat of terrorism: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/thailand/terrorism
I can see an increased risk especially when in proximity to government facilities (police stations, hospitals, ... ) as in case of attacks those have a higher chance of being targeted.
This said, I’m typing this from a coffee shop in downtown Hat Yai and didn’t have any safety concerns when I planned my trip here.
